RoHS test has become an international standard

RoHS testing stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. First implemented as a European Union regulation in 2003 (2002/95/EC), the RoHS test has become an international standard.

2011 saw the implementation of a new RoHS directive (2011/65/EU). RoHS 2 is the official name of this new rule. RoHS broadened the scope of the regulations to include all EEE, cables, and replacement parts of any kind (to be phased in through July 2019).

Coherence with other EU regulations, such as CE marking and declarations of compliance and REACH, was also given by the new legislation (a general act regulating registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances). For a product to be put on the European market, RoHS 2 requires the producer to supply the necessary technical paperwork to detail the manufacturer’s internal production control processes to verify there are no prohibited chemicals in EEE.

Only four of the compounds listed in RoHS 3 were restricted in the United States when California enacted limits on those substances.
1. Lead
2. Cadmium
3. Mercury
4. Chromium hexavalent

Only video displays are subject to these restrictions. Since the California RoHS legislation went into force in 2007, several states, including Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, Wisconsin, Indiana, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and New York, have implemented RoHS-style rules.

The California 65 This idea has been floating about for well over a decade. Standard, a regulation equivalent to RoHS testing certification, does not exist in the United States (CP65). This idea has been pounded in consumer items entering the United States are strictly controlled under this criterion.
